Free websites and web applications for non-profits

WeebPal runs a programme that builds websites and web applications, free of charge, for non-profit organisations working with children, pregnant women, older people and people with disabilities.

1. What we would like to do

Building for the web is what we know how to do. There are people doing work we could not do ourselves, and we would like some of our hours to go there.

So if your organisation needs a site or a system, we would be glad to build it, and the build costs you nothing. We take on one project every two months, which is what we can look after properly alongside the paid work. Write whenever suits you, and if the next slot is taken we will tell you when it opens.

2. What your organisation might need

The part the public sees. A site that says what you do and how to reach you, in one language or several. News and campaign pages. A donation page. A calendar of activities. A library of guides and forms to download. A page for each service and where it runs. Content that works with a screen reader and at large text sizes, and so on.

The part that runs the work. Registration and intake forms, with a waiting list. Records for the people you support. Appointment and session booking, for antenatal visits, therapy, check-ups or classes. Attendance for a day centre, a class or a home visit. Visit logs for outreach workers, working offline on a phone. Volunteer rosters and shifts. Membership and family records. Distribution of equipment and supplies, such as wheelchairs, hearing aids or milk. Referrals to and from other organisations. Donor records and receipts. Reminders by SMS or email. Reports for your funders, etc.

If it runs in a browser, we can probably build it.

3. What we cover, and what stays with you

We cover. Analysis, design, engineering, testing, deployment, documentation, training, and bug fixes and security patches with no end date, for as long as WeebPal is in business.

Stays with you. Hosting, domains and certificates, any commercial licences, the services the site calls, and the content. These are bought in your organisation's name. Nothing runs through us and nothing is added on top.

Before we start, we will put a figure on those running costs, so you can see the whole picture rather than find it out later. They are usually small, and we choose the technical route that keeps them that way.

4. Who we hope to hear from

It fits best when a few things are already true.

• Work that is not run for profit, where nobody is charged for what it delivers.
• Work mainly for children, pregnant women, older people or people with disabilities.
• An organisation that can sign and stand behind the data. An informal group can be sponsored by one.
• Someone who will look after the site afterwards.

If you are not sure whether you fit, write anyway and we will work it out together.

There is little we would turn down. We stay out of political campaigning and religious outreach, and out of anything where a mistake could harm someone's body, such as diagnosis or dosage. The records, scheduling and reporting around that kind of work we are glad to build.

5. What you get

The same team that works on our paid projects: architecture, backend, frontend, QA, DevOps and AI. About three months, because we start from platforms we already have.

Accessibility as standard, to WCAG 2.2 level AA, tested with real screen readers and on old phones. For many of the people you serve, that decides whether the site works at all.

We develop on anonymised copies of your data, and no photographs or names of the people you serve appear in anything we publish.

At handover, the running site, the full source code, documentation and training, and a perpetual free licence to the platform underneath. Nothing is locked in.

6. How to start

There is no form. Write a few lines about what you need and who it is for, and we will ask the rest ourselves.

• Your first message. We reply as soon as we see it, usually the same day, either way.
• An hour together to agree what a first version should cover.
• A written proposal and a working prototype, a few days later.
• An hour to go through it, and both sides decide.
• About three months of building, with a demo every two weeks.

The one thing we ask of you is time. About four hours a week from someone who can decide, and the first round of content. If this is not the season for it, write when it is.
